The Peer Tree is the private-pay pathway for organizing help, decluttering support, groups, family guidance, and practical next steps when a grant or public program is not the right fit. Ask about scope, cost, travel, consent, safety, and whether support is available in Edinburg or Hidalgo County.
Unburied, from The Peer Tree, offers a judgment-free digital pathway with peer support, groups, and tools for people directly affected and for friends or family supporters. It is not therapy, a crisis service, or a substitute for emergency help.
Tropical Texas Behavioral Health is the public behavioral-health authority serving Hidalgo County and lists adult and child mental health, substance-use, IDD, integrated primary care, MAT, veteran services, OSAR, and peer-support pathways. Walk-ins are accepted for new clients; ask what current service fits and what eligibility or payment rules apply.
Hidalgo County Human Services helps eligible residents apply for County Indigent Health Care and Hidalgo Blue, and lists funeral assistance and community-resource navigation. Call 956-318-2011 to confirm current documents, income and resource limits, residency rules, and available help.
Call 211 or use the Texas guided search to ask for current local housing, food, utility, transportation, health, benefits, and crisis-navigation resources in Edinburg and Hidalgo County. The service is a referral starting point, not a guarantee of eligibility, funding, shelter, or emergency response.
Safety and stability
These pathways serve different situations. Read the labels carefully before calling, especially when a response may involve crisis care, protective services, shelter, housing rules, legal advocacy, or emergency dispatch.
Call 911 when someone is in immediate danger, a fire or medical emergency is happening, violence is occurring, or emergency responders are needed. A housing or clutter concern that is not immediately dangerous may need a planned county, housing, code, or support response instead.
Call or text 988 for immediate emotional distress, suicidal thoughts, or a behavioral-health or substance-use crisis. Use 911 for immediate danger, fire, or a serious medical emergency.
Tropical Texas Behavioral Health lists a 24-hour crisis line for mental-health and substance-use emergencies across the Rio Grande Valley. Call 1-877-289-7199 for crisis support or information about local resources; use 911 for an immediate threat or medical emergency.
South Texas Health System Behavioral provides confidential assessments and inpatient or outpatient programs for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults, including substance-use treatment. Assessments are available 24/7 at 2102 W. Trenton Road; call first to confirm current access, payment, and level of care.
DHR Health lists a 24/7 Behavioral Hospital at 5510 Raphael Drive and a Counseling and Psychiatry Center at 2821 Michelangelo Drive. Ask about current assessment, insurance, appointments, and whether the level of care fits; this is medical care, not hoarding-specific cleanup.
The Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Mental Health Unit explains Section 28 applications and works with Tropical Texas Behavioral Health when a person may be seriously dangerous to self or others. The application does not guarantee admission; call the unit for process guidance and use 911 for immediate danger.
Mujeres Unidas / Women Together offers a 24/7 crisis hotline, emergency shelter, safety planning, counseling, legal advocacy, rape-crisis support, and transitional housing for survivors and families. Call 1-877-580-4879 before traveling so an advocate can discuss current options and safe contact.
Edinburg Code Enforcement responds to complaints and conducts inspections involving property maintenance, zoning, sanitation, and neighborhood nuisances. The city says education and compliance are part of its work; call 956-388-1838 to ask about jurisdiction and options, or call 911 for an emergency.
Edinburg 311 helps residents route city concerns, including code, health, utilities, and public works. Call 311 or 956-259-4357 when your concern is not an emergency and ask which department handles it; call 911 for immediate danger, fire, or medical emergency.
The city lists the Edinburg Fire Department as the local fire and emergency-response contact. Call 911 for fire, medical emergency, hazardous materials, or immediate danger; call the city’s main fire number for non-emergency information and ask what response fits.
Hidalgo County Emergency Management coordinates preparation, alerts, mitigation, and response for hurricanes, floods, severe weather, fires, public-health threats, and other disasters. Ask about emergency planning and special-needs registration; call 911 during an active emergency.
Texas APS accepts reports involving abuse, neglect, or exploitation of adults who may be unable to protect themselves. Call 1-800-252-5400 for a report; APS cannot force services, and 911 is the route for immediate danger.

Veterans, service members, National Guard, Reserves, and their supporters can call 988 and press 1, text 838255, or use chat for crisis support. Call 911 for immediate danger or a serious medical emergency.
People and practical help
These listings connect the local community with housing, food, behavioral health, benefits, transit, survivor advocacy, disability support, peer support, and practical resources. Ask about current availability, cost, scope, consent, and safety before relying on them.
Hidalgo County’s CIHCP and Hidalgo Blue programs help eligible residents who do not qualify for other state or federal health programs access health services. Confirm current income, asset, residency, household, document, and provider rules before relying on the program.
Hidalgo County Health and Human Services says no one will be denied covered public-health services because of an inability to pay and lists a financial-assistance application process. Ask clinic staff about the current form and covered services; call 911 for emergencies.
The Edinburg Housing Authority administers public housing and Section 8 / Housing Choice Voucher programs for eligible households. Its current notice says application processes can close or change, so call before traveling to confirm waitlist status, documents, accommodations, and available programs.
The Housing Authority of the County of Hidalgo provides public housing and Housing Choice Voucher information, but its site notes jurisdiction limits and limitations in McAllen and Edinburg. Confirm the correct authority, current application availability, and eligibility before applying.
Hidalgo County’s ESG program supports homelessness prevention, rapid rehousing, emergency shelter, and services such as case management, employment, health, mental-health, substance-use, and transportation support. Contact the county or 211 to identify current participating providers; funding is not guaranteed.
Food Bank RGV maintains a current pantry and meal locator for the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Contact the listed pantry before visiting to confirm hours, services, requirements, inventory, language access, and transportation.
DHR Health describes a food pantry in partnership with Food Bank RGV for people and families needing nutritious food. Review the current application and distribution information before traveling; call the hospital for current access and program details.
The St. Vincent de Paul Center at St. Joseph Catholic Church lists food, clothing, and resource help on Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Bring valid identification and address verification, and call before traveling because the organization currently says it is not providing rental or utility assistance.
Hidalgo County WIC provides nutrition support, breastfeeding help, food benefits, nutrition education, and referrals to Medicaid, SNAP, CHIP, food pantries, health care, and other services. Ask about current eligibility, appointments, mobile-unit locations, and language access.
Catholic Charities RGV lists emergency assistance, homelessness prevention, counseling, disaster relief, and a humanitarian respite center, along with food, housing, and referral support. Ask the agency about current Edinburg-area access, eligibility, language, and capacity before traveling.
Amigos Del Valle operates an Edinburg nutrition center at 1210 E. Kuhn Street and lists congregate meals, home-delivered meals, and regional senior-support services. Call to confirm age, homebound, meal, referral, transportation, and current schedule requirements.
UTRGV’s Student Food Pantry provides food assistance to students who complete an enrollment form and order before pickup. The Edinburg distribution schedule changes, so students should review current times and campus instructions before traveling.
The City of Edinburg’s public library offers public information, computer and internet resources, lifelong learning, workforce tools, and community programs. Confirm current hours, accessibility, card requirements, and technology availability before traveling.

Edinburg Solid Waste provides residential garbage collection after a city water account is established and explains cart placement, pickup timing, and service boundaries. Confirm the current collection schedule and accepted materials before setting anything out.

Older adults and family supporters can use county, Area Agency on Aging, and Amigos Del Valle pathways to ask about meals, transportation, care navigation, benefits, caregiver support, and home-modification resources. Confirm current provider, age, funding, and referral rules before relying on help.
