First conversations
You do not need to know the perfect service name before reaching out. These organizations can help you understand the landscape and identify a next step.
South Dakota's 211 service connects people to local resources and can help identify food, housing, transportation, health, utility, and other support. Call 211 or text a ZIP code to 898-211. Confirm the current program, address, hours, eligibility, and wait time before relying on a referral.
South Dakota's 988 service connects people with local trained counselors for emotional distress, suicide concerns, substance-use concerns, or questions about a loved one. It is not a cleanup provider and does not guarantee an in-home response; call 911 for immediate danger.
Capital Area Counseling Service serves Hughes and surrounding counties and lists outpatient counseling, assessments, crisis counseling, psychiatric services, case management, and recovery services. Its directory listing says Medicaid, Medicare, private insurance, scholarships, and hardship funding may be available. Ask about current intake, cost, wait time, and whether the concern fits its services.
South Dakota Urban Indian Health offers services to everyone and provides primary care, behavioral health, cultural health, and medication-assisted treatment in the Pierre and Sioux Falls areas. It accepts most insurance and describes a sliding scale for underinsured and uninsured people. Confirm current appointments, fees, eligibility, and scope.
Dakota at Home is South Dakota's aging and disability resource center. Its trained staff can help older adults, adults with disabilities, and caregivers identify public and private supports that may help someone remain safely at home or in the community. This is navigation, not guaranteed in-home cleaning or emergency response.
Pierre Area Referral Service has served the community since 1974 and provides referral and direct services for people in need. Call before visiting to ask about current food, transportation, utility, rent, clothing, and personal-care assistance. Funding and supplies are limited and the agency does not provide emergency medical or cleanup services.
The International OCD Foundation directory can be searched by Pierre, ZIP code, or full address for clinicians and programs that indicate an interest in OCD or hoarding-related care. IOCDF says it does not endorse listed providers. Ask about current hoarding-disorder experience, licensure, insurance, fees, wait time, privacy, and whether home-based or telehealth work fits.
Safety and stability
These pathways serve different situations. Read the labels carefully before calling, especially when a response may involve protective services, housing screening, crisis response, shelter, code enforcement, or emergency assistance.
Call 911 when there is immediate danger, fire, a medical emergency, violence, or a threat that cannot wait for a scheduled service. Emergency dispatch is not a hoarding-support program, behavioral-health counseling service, or cleanup provider. When the situation is not immediately dangerous, begin with support, care, or navigation.
South Dakota Adult Protective Services may be appropriate when a vulnerable adult may be experiencing abuse, neglect, self-neglect, or exploitation. Dakota at Home says reports are handled during regular business hours and APS is not an emergency service. Call 911 for immediate danger and confirm what information is needed for a report.
The South Dakota Department of Social Services connects residents to behavioral-health providers, crisis-care information, treatment and recovery services, and community mental-health centers. Ask which regional provider fits Pierre or Hughes County and what funding or financial-assistance pathway may apply. This is not an emergency dispatch service.
Capital Area Counseling Service lists crisis counseling, mental-health evaluations, addiction and recovery services, and financial-assistance information. Its contact page says the office is not monitored 24 hours a day. Call 911 for an emergency or 988 for behavioral-health crisis support, then ask CACS about current access, fees, and hardship options.
Missouri Shores protects victims and serves survivors of domestic and sexual violence. It lists a local and toll-free crisis line, advocacy, support groups, and shelter-related help. Use a safer device when needed, call 911 for immediate danger, and ask about current confidential options, transportation, shelter capacity, and financial assistance.
The City of Pierre uses the International Property Maintenance Code and provides a route for reporting violations. A report can lead to inspection, notice, deadlines, or enforcement. Ask what voluntary steps, correction timelines, appeal rights, and available community referrals apply before relying on enforcement as a solution.
Pierre's Solid Waste Facility lists weekday and Saturday hours and provides a local disposal route for household and property-cleanout materials. Confirm current hours, accepted materials, load-securing rules, fees, access-card requirements, and whether a special item needs prior approval before transporting anything.
The City of Pierre operates a regional landfill serving seven counties. Customers must be pre-authorized and have an established charge account with the Solid Waste Facility. This is a disposal option, not a sorting, organizing, clinical, or emergency service. Confirm current fee schedules, accepted materials, and safe transportation requirements.
Pierre Municipal Utilities provides electric, water, wastewater, billing, and utility-emergency information. If utilities are disconnected or at risk, call the city and ask about current payment arrangements and assistance referrals. After-hours utility emergencies follow the city's posted communications process; this is not a housing or cleanup program.
Hughes County identifies county offices that can help residents get started with planning, taxes, veteran services, and county coordination. The State's Attorney handles county legal work and abuse-and-neglect oversight but does not provide private civil legal representation. Confirm the correct office and current hours before visiting.
The Housing and Redevelopment Commission of Pierre offers assisted and public housing and describes rent and deposit assistance for eligible low-income families, older adults, and people with disabilities. The local directory says this is not emergency housing or emergency rent payment assistance and that waitlists may apply. Ask about reasonable accommodations and current availability.
South Dakota Housing explains rental-assistance programs and directs applicants toward local housing authorities and affordable-housing options. It does not process most rental-assistance applications directly and cannot guarantee a voucher or unit. Confirm the right local agency, current waitlist, eligibility, and documentation.
HUD's South Dakota resource page points residents to 211, housing counselors, homelessness services, rental and eviction resources, legal help, and utility assistance. Treat it as a navigation map and confirm each local provider's address, capacity, eligibility, and application process before relying on it.
People and practical help
These listings offer connections for care, education, housing, benefits, food, organizing, transportation, or disposal. They are independent organizations; ask about current availability, cost, scope, consent, and safety before relying on them.
The Pierre Area Referral Service directory listing describes emergency short-term lodging, transportation, utility assistance with a disconnection notice, rent help with an eviction notice, food pantries, prescriptions, clothing, hygiene supplies, and other support. Call first; appointments, documentation, household rules, and limited supplies may apply.
The Pierre Senior Center offers potlucks, coffee, activities, social connection, volunteer opportunities, and access to AARP tax assistance for seniors and low-income households. The local directory lists a $48 annual membership. Ask about current meal schedules, transportation, accessibility, and support for caregivers or older adults living alone.
South Dakota SNAP helps eligible households buy food while working toward financial stability. The state provides online and paper application paths and explains that benefit levels depend on household size, income, and expenses. SNAP does not pay for cleaning or disposal; ask a benefits specialist about current eligibility and documents.
South Dakota Medicaid and CHIP can help eligible residents with medical care, hospital stays, prescriptions, and other services. Medicaid may also cover certain long-term-care and community services. Apply through the state's benefits system or local office and ask what supports are covered; coverage is not a guarantee of hoarding cleanup.
South Dakota DSS connects residents to food, heating and utility assistance, financial assistance, employment help, and community action agencies. If a home is at risk because of unpaid utilities or unsafe heat, ask about current LIHEAP and emergency-assistance routes before disconnection. Programs do not guarantee cleanup funding.
South Dakota's emergency-services guide lists GROW South Dakota as a community-action agency serving Hughes and nearby counties. Eligible residents may be able to ask about rent or mortgage, deposits, food, utilities, and other emergency services. Confirm current funding, county coverage, application steps, and wait time directly.
Legal Services of North Dakota is not the correct pathway here; South Dakota residents should use South Dakota legal-services and bar referral routes for housing, benefits, consumer, or elder-law questions. Apply through the statewide civil-legal intake options and ask about eviction, unsafe housing, benefits, or disability-related issues. Legal aid does not provide organizing or cleanup.
South Dakota Free Legal Answers lets qualified lower-income residents ask volunteer attorneys questions about civil legal problems. There is no guarantee that an attorney will answer every question and the service is not emergency legal representation. Use it for questions about housing, benefits, debt, or consumer issues and verify any deadline.
River Cities Public Transit serves Pierre and surrounding rural communities and describes public, medical, veteran, and specialized transportation. Rides may need to be scheduled in advance and fares or eligibility can vary. Confirm the current pickup area, reservation window, accessibility, and cost before planning a pantry, housing, clinic, or disposal trip.
Hughes County lists a Community Health Nurse and WIC office in Pierre and directs residents to South Dakota's WIC program for current details. Ask about nutrition, maternal and child health, referrals, and related public-health support. These services do not provide hoarding cleanup or emergency response.
Oahe Child Development Center maintains a community-resource list that includes 211, behavioral-health providers, domestic-violence support, and other family resources. AAA Rousse advertises hoarding cleanup, property cleanouts, deep cleaning, junk removal, and disposal in Pierre and Hughes County. It is an independent commercial lead, not an Alliance or Fight the Blight provider. Junk-A-Haulix advertises dumpsters, furniture recycling, donation pickup, downsizing cleanouts, and hoarding cleanouts in Pierre. It is an independent commercial lead, not an Alliance or Fight the Blight provider. Confirm local availability, materials accepted, pricing, weight limits, consent, and disposal practices before booking.
The Peer Tree offers nonclinical hoarding and clutter support, including organizing help, groups, family guidance, and practical next steps. Ask about current availability, service area, scope, pacing, privacy, and fees before beginning. The Peer Tree is a separate private-pay pathway from Fight the Blight's nonprofit programming.
Unburied, from The Peer Tree, is a judgment-free digital peer-support pathway for people affected by hoarding and clutter concerns and for friends and family. It can offer ongoing connection, tools, and momentum from Pierre or anywhere else. It is not therapy, clinical care, or emergency support.
