You do not need to know the perfect service name before reaching out. These organizations can help you understand the landscape and identify a next step.
Huntsville and North Alabama community partners use 211 to connect people with shelter, food, housing, utility, health, and other local referrals. Ask for Madison County options and confirm current eligibility, capacity, hours, and referral requirements with each program.
WellStone is a qualified-care pathway serving North Alabama. Its Huntsville campus offers therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management, substance-use services, and community support. WellStone says no one is turned away because of inability to pay; confirm current eligibility, insurance, age range, consent, and whether home or community-based support is available.
NAMI Huntsville offers peer-led education and support for people living with mental-health conditions and their families. It is a support and education pathway rather than therapy, emergency response, or a cleanup provider.
The International OCD Foundation directory can be searched for clinicians, support groups, organizers, and programs that indicate an interest in hoarding-related care. Listings are not endorsements. Ask about current experience, licensure, fees, insurance, wait time, privacy, and whether home-based or telehealth work fits.
Safety and stability
These pathways serve different situations. Read the labels carefully before calling, especially when a response may involve protective services, crisis response, domestic-violence advocacy, probate court, or emergency dispatch.
Call 911 when there is immediate danger, fire, a medical emergency, violence, or a threat that cannot wait for a scheduled service. Emergency dispatch is not a hoarding-support program, counseling service, or cleanup provider.
Call or text 988 for emotional distress, a mental-health or substance-use crisis, or concern about someone else. 988 is not a cleanup provider and does not guarantee an in-home response; call 911 for immediate danger.
The Alabama Department of Mental Health identifies WellStone Emergency Services in Huntsville as serving Madison and surrounding counties, with mobile crisis services and a 24/7 crisis center. It is qualified care, not a cleanup provider; call 911 for immediate danger.
Alabama DHR Adult Protective Services investigates qualifying reports involving adults who are unable to protect their own interests and can arrange or coordinate services. The statewide Adult Abuse Hotline is available 24/7. APS is not a cleaning service and may not be appropriate for every clutter concern.
Madison County Probate Court explains the process for petitions seeking involuntary mental-health treatment. This is a legal and clinical pathway for serious situations, not a general referral or voluntary cleanup service. Get direct guidance before pursuing court action.
Crisis Services of North Alabama operates a 24-hour helpline and connects survivors to HOPE Place emergency shelter, safety planning, counseling, court advocacy, and referrals. This is a specialized safety resource, not general hoarding support. Ask about safe ways to communicate, children, pets, accessibility, and current shelter availability.
People and practical help
These listings offer connections for care, housing, shelter, food, benefits, utilities, disposal, legal support, organizing, or peer support. They are independent organizations; ask about current availability, cost, scope, consent, and safety before relying on them.
The Huntsville Housing Authority offers public housing and Housing Choice Voucher pathways for qualifying households, including seniors and people with disabilities. Its current information says public-housing applications are handled through its office and wait times vary. Confirm current openings, reasonable accommodations, accessibility, and documentation directly.
The City of Huntsville describes a local Continuum of Care and coordinated-entry system that identifies, assesses, and connects people experiencing housing crisis to shelter, housing, and support services. Call before traveling because intake rules and capacity change.
Downtown Rescue Mission provides emergency services to people experiencing homelessness, hunger, or crisis, including shelter and meals. Confirm current intake, household arrangements, transportation, belongings limits, and whether the available service fits the situation before relying on it.
First Stop works with people experiencing homelessness through outreach, meals, urgent supplies, housing connections, disability and income support, and case management. Ask what current services are available and whether a referral or coordinated-entry assessment is needed.
Huntsville Assistance Program operates emergency food pantries and limited emergency financial assistance for Madison County households. Its site says pantry assistance is limited to four times per year and financial appointments depend on available capacity. Confirm current documents and hours before visiting.
Legal Services Alabama provides civil legal help for qualifying residents and handles housing, eviction, utilities, public benefits, and domestic-violence issues. Call before a court deadline and ask whether the particular case fits its current capacity. Legal aid is not emergency response or cleanup.
Interfaith Mission Service's FOODLine connects people facing a food emergency with local church pantries. Its volunteers gather household and location information and arrange a pickup with a pantry that fits. Call during the published weekday hours and confirm what documents or household information are needed.
Huntsville Community Development enforces city codes involving unsafe buildings, substandard housing, junk and litter, and public nuisances. This is a regulatory pathway that can create deadlines or enforcement costs; it is not consent-based hoarding support or guaranteed funding. Ask about hardship extensions when a notice has been issued.
Madison County Waste Control serves county residents outside Huntsville city limits and routes questions about old furniture, appliances, tree limbs, and other large items to the proper district. The county lists a monthly garbage fee and separate district service for yard debris. Confirm your district, service area, and material rules.
Huntsville's curbside information describes residential bulk trash and collection of containerized yard waste, junk, rubbish, and some non-hazardous building materials. Hazardous waste, medical or biological waste, construction debris, and other excluded materials are not collected. Check the address schedule and current fee rules before setting items out.
The Peer Tree is the private-pay pathway for organizing help, decluttering support, groups, family guidance, and practical next steps when a grant or public program is not the right fit. Ask about scope, cost, travel, consent, safety, and whether requested support is available in Huntsville.
Unburied, from The Peer Tree, offers a judgment-free digital pathway with peer support, groups, and tools for people directly affected and for friends or family supporters. It is not therapy, a crisis service, or a substitute for emergency help.
